Colder – Issue 1

20 Nov

A grey-skinned man has his bloodied finger shoved through his gum, touching his eyeball. In close-up. In gruesome detail. This is the cover of the first issue of Colder, from Dark Horse Comics.

So far I don’t really have any idea what’s going on. A fire in an insane asylum 70 years ago spawns a mischievous demon, Jack Nimble. A fella who seems to feed on the souls of the suicidal. The man who witnessed Jack Nimble’s birth has remained the same age, silent, and grey skinned for 70 years. And also his body temperate is 37 degrees – you might say ‘colder’ than normal… He’s being cared for by a young nurse, Reece. That’s it. I have no idea where this going at all.

The cover is amazing. It’s disgusting yet magnetic at the same time. I’m sure it’ll attract a lot of attention in stores. The art inside is really good, with several memorable moments. Jack Nimble is really well characterised, kind of reminds me of a cross between Bob from Twin Peaks and the Joker. There’re some great little character moments, particular involving Reece in her apartment. They seem to have a real eye for observing these moments and it adds a human touch to an otherwise weird story.

So far, it seems that this has the potential to be a good series. The story left me only with questions, but there’s some real talent in both the writing and artwork.  One to watch for sure.
